Overview
Nikini Poya, in August, marks the start of Vas, the traditional three-month "rains retreat" during which Buddhist monks remain at a single monastery rather than travelling. The practice dates back to the Buddha's own time: before it became a formal rule, wandering monks had already stopped travelling during the monsoon because heavy rains made journeys difficult and increased the risk of inadvertently harming small creatures underfoot. Followers of Jainism reportedly criticised Buddhist monks for continuing to travel and cause such harm during the rains, prompting the Buddha to formalise the retreat. During Vas, monks focus on meditation, study and teaching, while lay communities take on the responsibility of supporting them with food, robes and other necessities, a relationship of mutual obligation that continues through to the Kathina ceremony months later. Nikini Poya is also associated with the anniversary of the First Buddhist Council, held at the Sattapanni Cave near Rajgir in India shortly after the Buddha's death, at which the monk Mahakasyapa presided over the recitation that established the Tipitaka, the core Buddhist scriptures.
Significance
During the Vas season, monks traditionally remain at a single monastery rather than travelling, a practice dating back to the time of the Buddha, originally to avoid trampling crops and insects during the rainy season.
How it's observed
Observance is generally quieter than the major Poya days. As always, alcohol sales are banned nationwide for the day.
