Overview
May Day, Sri Lanka's observance of International Workers' Day, traces back to 1927, when trade union pioneer A. E. Goonesinha, often called the "Father of Sri Lanka's Labour Movement", organised the island's first May Day gathering; the first full-scale rally followed in 1933, with workers marching to Galle Face Green in symbolic dress, white sarongs and red-striped banians for men, red sarees for women, accompanied by drummers and dancers and singing labour songs rather than chanting political slogans. The day became an official public holiday in 1956 under the government of S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. Over the following decades, May Day rallies gradually shifted from a purely labour-focused observance into a fixture of Sri Lankan political life, with the country's major political parties each holding large, competing rallies, particularly in Colombo, that today draw as much attention for their political messaging as for their original purpose of honouring workers' rights.
Significance
As in many countries, the date traces back to the international labour movement of the late 19th century and is marked with political rallies organised by trade unions and political parties.
