Overview
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and falls within Holy Week, the most solemn period of the Christian calendar, immediately before Easter Sunday. Christianity arrived in Sri Lanka with successive waves of European colonisation: Portuguese Catholic missionaries from the early 1500s, followed later by Dutch Protestant and then British influence, and today the island's Christian community, roughly seven percent of the population, is heavily concentrated along the western coast. Negombo, nicknamed "Little Rome" for its unusually high concentration of Catholic churches, is one of the most significant centres of observance; local parishes there and elsewhere hold Stations of the Cross processions and, in some communities, elaborate Passion plays dramatising the crucifixion story. Unlike joyful festival days, Good Friday is treated as a day of quiet reflection: church services are subdued, and many Christian households avoid festivities until Easter Sunday itself.
