Overview
This additional public holiday, immediately following Vesak, exists to give the country a second day to accommodate the scale of Vesak's celebrations. Many Sri Lankans travel specifically to see the illuminated pandals and lantern displays in other towns, visit temples, and take part in dansala, activities that often extend well past the main Poya day itself. Decorations and free food stalls typically remain up for a second night, and the same restrictions on alcohol sales that apply on Vesak day itself generally continue through this extra day.
Significance
Given the scale of Vesak celebrations nationwide, including significant travel to view illuminations and attend temple events, this second day helps accommodate the practical logistics of the holiday.
How it's observed
Many Vesak decorations and dansal (free food) stalls remain up for a second night. Expect similar closures to Vesak day itself, with alcohol sales still restricted in most areas.
